Aaron Rodgers v. Brett Favre, by the numbers

Brett Favre made news again. Man, I hate typing those five words.

On Tuesday, talking on Atlanta radio station 790 The Zone, Favre said Aaron Rodgers “fell into a good situation” and “the biggest surprise to me would be that he didn’t (win a Super Bowl) sooner.”

Oh, you mean, like, in his fourth full year as a starter, like you did? Fine. Rodgers did it in his third. Want more evidence of Rodgers’ superiority? Let’s let the numbers speak for themselves.

In fact, through 51 starts, here’s both players’ career stat lines. (via Pro Football Reference, of course)

Favre

1101-1793, 61.4%, 12003 yds, 82 TD, 57 INT, 84.5 rating, 30-21 W-L, 0 SB

Rodgers

1106-1693, 65.3%, 13719 yds, 98 TD, 33 INT, 100.4 rating, 31-20 W-L, 1 SB

Oh, and Aaron Rodgers has rushed for twice as many yards and more touchdowns.

For those of you hanging on to that ol’ romantic notion that the ol’ hopeless romantic gunslinger was a once-in-a-generation QB, well, perhaps you need to look no further than the current Packers roster to find the next great signal-caller.

That’ll be all, Brett.

This isn’t baseball John. There are too many factors that go into statistics in football that are outside of the player. I know you have to work with what you have, but come on.

I look at the write up and it makes me see someone that doesn’t realize the differences in how football was played in the time frames, how the players around them factor in on offense and how well the defense plays, and how many factors are out of control of the QB on a given Sunday.

I’m not defending Favre, in fact, I would prefer that he not talk too. I’m a fan of them both on the field, and Rodgers is off to a fantastic start to his career.

As a reader I feel you have a weak case in the use of statistics. Go back to Pro Football Reference and compare the first 50 starts of Joe Montana and Tony Romo…or how Rodgers blows away Dan Marino’s 87 career rushing yards.

It just occurred to me that the name is “Gossip” sports. That makes sense and if the intent was in the name of gossip, I apologize. That would be well done.

I agree with your points. The league is certainly very different now, as passing is less inherently risky than it was in Favre’s days. You correctly assume that, as our name implies, we’re not a Football Outsiders over here. I’m not here to write a dissertation with advanced metrics on why Rodgers is a better QB than Favre (though I think he might be), only to point out that Favre doesn’t have much of a leg to stand on when it comes to any criticism or backhanded compliments of A-Rod. Thanks for reading, and for your feedback, I do hope you come back and find something else on the site you like!

    John Gorman,
I’m very interested in your topic about Bret Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers. I go to Johnson and Wales University in Denver Colorado and I am a huge Packers fan. For my English Comp Class I have to write a compare and contrast paper. I decided to do my paper on how Aaron Rodgers is a better Quarterback than Bret Favre. If you have any stats or any more pointers that could help me in writing a great and convincing paper, that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time,
    Erik Swenson

Lets not forget that Rodgers took over a 13-3 team… Favre had to take over a wreck and his talent was not even close to what Rodgers has now. Yes brett took to many chances…That should have been stopped early in his career. Brett should have 4 rings but only has 1…lets also not forget that mvp 95,96,and 97. 297 straight starts. Lets wait untill Rodgers is at the end of his career and compare them then. Also one note…Where was the tom brady rule at on brett in the nfc championship game.

I am I die hard Packer fan, grew up there, born in 1961 so I only remember all the losing seasons prior to Farve, and being left out of the playoffs year after year. I agree with Curtis that Rogers took over a championship calibur team that even got better, and the defenses today are not what they were. This is a passing league based on the defensive rule changes that took place years ago. Rogers when given the opportunity to stage a forth quarter comeback is horrible compared to Farve. Farve is the the poster boy for toughness at the QB position, something Rogers has along way to go to prove he is in Farve’s league.

I have loved gb since 2000. Im 14 years old and i love brett favre. I hate how they compare the two. Both are good quarterbacks FAVre has moany records and has 1 ring. Rodgers has no records that matter and 1 ring. Favre took the team form terrible to the top. Rodgers started with a team from the top. Can rodgers lead 4th quarter comebacks . no favre led more comebacks than aaron rodgers will win games. I still love green bay but the matter is BRett favre is better than aaron rodgers .
    FAVRE 4 EVER
